These crones were carved by a talented local craftsman here in B.C whose animist nature allows him to see and carve wood so that the spirits come through.
Denis Gobeil who is also a dear friend and I have collaborated together to bring the series of "Knotty Crones" out and into the world.

Each crone after being carved by Denis came here to my home and studio where I sat with them for days and days listening to what each one wanted, and for her tell me a little bit about who she is...

Some of the crones are shy and still in my studio, but I am patient and will wait for them to speak to me, where as others started to tell me their stories right away!

This crone brings the wisdom of the sea and the wild untouched places along the sea shores. These are uninhabited places that are hard to get to where the salty sea spray lands softly on the rocks washes up bones and beautiful sea shells from the small marine animals who inhabit these areas.

Her hair is brown bear, with a tuft of wolf fur at the top, which were left
by these rambling animals wandering along the shores looking for washed up fishes and small birds to play with.
She herself is carved from driftwood washed up on the shores so she has seen many sights-that of the forest where she came from and that of the sea and beaches along the shores of the Pacific Northwest.

She also has small feathers stuck in her hair, it matters not which birds they come from, for each one was a gift to her and she adorns herself with them.

On her forehead is a small piece of amber representing the ancient aspect of her being, for amber is thousands of years old and is related to her as resin that comes from the ancient woods of her ancestors...

A small piece of abalone shells and the spine bone form a lizard of some sort that washed up on the shore also adorns her reminding us that as with all things there is a grand cycling to life, death and re-birth...

She is meant to be hung on the wall and open in the back allowing for this.
